WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS 2022
What you wear to your family session really does matter! It can make a big impact (good or bad). I HIGHLY recommend paying close attention to what you wear and ask someone for help if you need. One of the hardest things about getting family photos taken is making the family outfit decisions. It can be stressful and overwhelming… I tell you this because I know first hand! I have been through this many times with my own family and love helping my clients/readers with easy wardrobe choices. Today, I’m sharing my process and helpful tips as you are preparing for your family session.
1. CHOOSE MOM’S OUTFIT FIRST
When choosing what to wear for your family photos, I always recommend starting with mom first. Do you have a dress you love? Do you need to shop for one? Being a mom, we are the hardest to style and want to look good, so this is the best starting place and build everyone’s outfits from there. Start a pin board and pinning dresses you like. It’s easy to see them all in one place and quickly narrow down favorites.
2. EFFORTLESS MATCHING OUTFITS
Once mom’s dress has been decided, it’s pretty easy to build out from there. My general rule is to keep similar color tone depths. It doesn’t look good to have one family member in white and one wearing black. If mom chooses a light dress, then everyone else can easily wear mid-tones, chambray button up or cream or neutral henley shirts. If mom chooses a darker color dress (think dark blue or deep red), it’s best to stay with those richer colors – dark blue, green, burnt orange, browns, etc. I don’t match colors as much as I do tone depth and it always looks good with out matching too much.
3. GET A VISUAL FIRST
I always recommend start a ‘what to wear’ Pinterest board for your photos. Then, start with pinning your favorite outfits. Looking at a Pinterest board with all outfits and style close together usually gives me a good visual so I can start narrowing choices down. Once you’ve selected your favorite dress, make sure to remove all other choices so you can keep a focused outfit pin board. Next, start pinning other items you think will look good on your kids. When in doubt, I would choose a solid color shirt or for women/girls small floral prints are a good classic organic option too.
Next, go through everyone’s closets and pull 1-2 items they have that would work in the color range you selected. I start laying things on our upstairs banister to start seeing how I like all the colors and patterns together. You will quickly see what you like and don’t, so you know who you still need to purchase for.
