HOW TO CARE FOR A NEW MOM
Is there someone that you care about in your life that’s a new mom? Wondering how you can best care for them after becoming a new mom? I’m a mom of four and newborn photographer. Today I’m sharing a few of my best ideas for caring for that special new mom in your life.
Being a new mom can be lovely and joyful, but also overwhelming and exhausting! Even though I’m a mom myself, there have been times I wasn’t sure how to help my new mom friends. I’ve been a mom for 9 years now and have had lots of friends have babies. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to care for a friend that just had a baby.
1. BRING MOM A MEAL
This is my favorite idea! It’s simple, but HIGH impact! I have been on the receiving end of having meals brought to our family having having kids and I’ll say that it’s incredibly helpful! Especially if there are older siblings. Making a meal with a newborn and toddler is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do at times. The days run together and you realized you never even got to shower. So when someone would bring us a home cooked meal when we were ragged and run down, it felt like the best way for someone to show us love and care.
Another tip as someone who is giving meals to new moms regularly, is to keep a running list of your favorite meals to make that are easy to transport. I usually like to send the new mom a list of 3 choices I’m interested in making for them to choose from. It makes me feel good giving moms a choice because everyone has different tastes and sometimes kids are picky!
2. TAKE A SPECIAL GIFT FOR THE OLDER SIBLINGS
Another way to care for a new mom is to take a little gift for the older siblings. Something that will keep them busy is always a bonus! Someone once gifted me magnetic ABCs. My son loved playing with them and kept him interested and occupied while I was busy with the baby.
3. OFFER TO HELP MOM WITH HOUSEHOLD CHORES
If you’re pretty close with this mom friend, you can offer to serve them by doing house chores. If you’re interested in lending a helping hand to someone, I’ll say, “I’m free on x or y day/time and would love to do x,y or z for you. Give them a list of 3 things you’re happy to do for them to choose from. Here is a list of a few idas:
1. Mow the lawn
2. Pickup groceries
3. Clean their kitchen
4. Take the older siblings for an hour and play outside
5. Watch the baby so mom can shower
I hope this list has given you some great ideas for ways to care for new moms that are in your life. Please leave a comment and let me know if you end of doing any of these!
